東インド古典舞踊オリッシーは、１２世紀頃、東インド・オディッシャ州プリーにあるヒンドゥー寺院で、 ジャガンナータ神に舞や歌を捧げたことが始まりとされています。全宇宙の神、ジャガンナータ神は、ヴィシュヌ神の化身の一つとされ、クリシュナ神であるとも言われています。インドでは、踊りや音楽は神へのバクティ（献身的な愛）なしには存在しないと言われており、現在でもその精神は大切に受け継がれてきています。

踊りの特徴は、胴の動きと複雑なフットワーク、曲線的で柔らかく、情感的、叙情的な優美な踊りです。踊りのポーズはどれもオディッシャにある寺院の彫刻そのもので、”動く彫刻”と呼ばれています。
